Rare Earth Photography
of the American West
Featured Artist of the Month!
"Photography of the American west has been the inextinguishable artistic passion of my life. Ever since I left my eastern home in 1965 to attend college in Oregon I have been drawn back again and again by the grandeur and vastness of America's mountainous half. Years spent in eastern cities only made me more eager to return to the western land I loved. Since moving to Dixon (twenty five miles south of Taos) I've begun a project that involves creating large-sized color panoramas of the southwestern land and sky. I use a combination of traditional photographic means and computer technology to create wide panoramas from a series of separate photographs.
I grew up in the Connecticut shoreline. I attended Reed College and MIT and studied photography with Minor White. I attended the Rhode Island School of Design and studied photography with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. I received an MFA in 1973 and later taught photography at Drexel University in Philadelphia until I operated a commercial photography studio there.
My clients were corporations and advertising agencies. In 1988 I created and marketed a retail product "MacPhotography Workshop", a four-hour long interactive educational software program that taught the basics of camera operation and darkroom work. As a result of its success I began working with corporations who wanted me to create interactive computer programs for employee training. In 1998 I moved to New Mexico where I began my series of panoramic landscape photographs while teaching digital photography at the University of New Mexico in Taos. I wrote a textbook, "Introduction to Digital Photography" (Prentice Hall, 2002) which is now widely used at American colleges. In 2002 I was included in the New Mexico Acclaimed Artists Series and five very large photographic prints of my panoramas were purchased by the state for display in Santa Fe at the Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources."
